The Bonaparte House and the old town
On Rue Saint-Charles, the Bonaparte House tells the story of Napoleon’s childhood in Ajaccio: period rooms, family furniture and curated keepsakes. A date in this quarter often starts with this visit, then continues through the nearby alleys. The cathedral, where Napoleon was baptised, is only steps away and welcomes you with the coolness of its old stone.
Place Foch and the market
Place Foch, nicknamed the Palm Tree Square, is Ajaccio’s true living room: a fountain crowned by a statue of young Napoleon, tall palms and busy terraces. Mornings bring the market, scented with citrus, Corsican charcuterie and mountain cheeses. A sunny coffee in the heart of the square is already an invitation to keep talking before a stroll along the seafront.
The Fesch Palace and Place d’Austerlitz
The Fesch Palace, now the fine arts museum, holds one of France’s richest Italian painting collections, assembled by Cardinal Fesch, Napoleon’s uncle. Higher up, Place d’Austerlitz honours the great battles. On Lyad, locals share their favourite routes through the imperial city; it is up to you to find someone to travel back in time with.
